Pregnancy and Your Teeth: What You Should Know

Posted .

Are you pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant? If so, you’re probably expecting a number of changes, but did you know that your teeth may change as much as your body? Similarly, had you heard that it’s vital for you to protect your oral health in order to protect the health of your baby?

During pregnancy, your body releases many hormones for the health of your unborn child. However, due to these hormones, you’ll be more likely to get gingivitis. In fact, your body will act more aggressively to the plaque that is in your mouth. This can cause inflammation and the symptoms of gum disease. Furthermore, with morning sickness, you may have more acid in your stomach, and if you vomit, your enamel may wear down.

Similarly, if you have gingivitis, or are dealing with tooth decay, you’ll be more likely to give premature birth. Similarly, if you’re dealing with these issues, you’re also more likely to give birth to smaller children.

Still, there are a few things you can do if you want to keep your teeth strong—and to keep your baby healthy. As you may have already guessed, visiting a dentist is something you should do at least once during your pregnancy. You should also remember to floss at least once a day and remember to brush twice a day.
