Got a Toothache? This is What You Should Do

Posted .

Toothaches are common dental issues in the world today. Sometimes they result from simple irritations to your tooth while other times they result from a larger problem. To help you with your toothache, especially because it causes extreme pain and discomfort, Dr. Richard J. Gawarzewski and our dental team have some helpful tips and information we would like to share with you.

First, swish with warm saltwater. To make the rinse, mix a half teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water. Then, swish it around in your mouth for about a minute. You can do this every two or three hours to relieve pain. Second, reach for floss and clean the spaces between your teeth. Do your best to remove any food that is stuck between your teeth. That food could be causing the irritation. Third, reduce any swelling by placing an ice pack outside of the tender area. This can reduce swelling and relieve pain. Fourth, take over-the-counter pain medication if needed. But, whatever you do, do not place the medication directly on the gums near the aching tooth. Doing so can burn the gum tissue and cause harm. Fifth, if your toothache still does not go away after two days of using these tips, call our office and schedule an appointment with your dentist at your earliest convenience. You could be suffering from a more serious dental issue, like tooth decay, that needs to be solved as soon as possible.
