The Answers to Commonly Asked Questions About Root Canal Therapy

Posted .

Sometimes dental treatments can be quite overwhelming and even confusing, and a root canal treatment is one of them. Many people aren’t sure why a root canal treatment is needed or even what it is. So, if you’re one of those people, our dentist, Dr. Richard J. Gawarzewski, is happy to share his knowledge by answering questions about root canal therapy in Berlin, New Jersey.

Why would I need a root canal?

A root canal is necessary when decay, an extreme blow to the face, a crack, or multiple dental treatments affect a tooth’s dental pulp, which is the tooth’s soft internal core. When the pulp is affected, it becomes inflamed or infected. Root canal treatment is the last treatment option before tooth extraction, and it’s a great way to save a tooth when other restoration methods cannot.

What are some symptoms of needing a root canal?

If you need a root canal treatment, it’s common to have severe pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums, and tooth discoloration. But, sometimes there are no symptoms and the issue is often detected at a dental checkup, which is one of the reasons why your checkup is so important.

What is the process of root canal therapy?

The process of restoring a tooth with root canal therapy is quite simple, but it oftentimes requires several appointments. Your dentist will first remove the internal pulp. Then, he will clean the root canal and pulp chamber. When he is done, he will fill the tooth and will cap it with a dental crown.
