What Questions Should You Be Asking Your Dentist?

Posted .

When you go to your bi-annual dental cleanings, do you know what questions to ask our dental team? We are happy to help you maintain your healthy smile by recommending appropriate solutions.

Routine dental visits are designed to spot potential problems early on and to provide thorough cleanings, the removal of tartar deposits, a thorough flossing, and the polishing of your teeth. All of these measures help keep cavities and gingivitis–gum disease–away at bay while enhancing your smile. While you are here, consider asking these questions to help keep your smile great:

#1 Do you I need to improve my daily oral hygiene routine?

Eating balanced meals and limiting sugary snacks can provide your teeth and gums with the nourishment they need. Be sure to brush twice a day for two minutes, and floss between teeth. See your dentist bi-annually to remove tartar deposits.

#2 Do I need help with sensitive teeth?

Tooth pain can occur when eating certain foods or beverages–hot, cold, sticky, acidic, or sweet. In these circumstances, the tooth enamel has likely eroded, exposing the sensitive dentin or tooth pulp layer beneath. You may incur tooth sensitivity when your gums recede, or you have bruxism (clenching or grinding your teeth), or a tooth chip or fracture.

#3 Do I need help removing stains from my teeth?

Extrinsic discoloration of teeth happens when the tooth’s surface (enamel) becomes stained from external causes, such as eating or drinking coffee, tea, wine, berries, tomato sauces, or habitual tobacco use. Teeth whitening can help overcome these stains.

Intrinsic discoloration can happen because of medical conditions, medical treatment, taking medications, or even from heredity. This staining of the inside of teeth may be camouflaged with the help of dental veneers or composite bonding.
