A Night Guard for Bruxism

Posted .

We all we grind our teeth at some point in our lives. The technical term for teeth grinding is bruxism, and the habit often goes away after a short time. Unfortunately for some, the habit persists for much longer, sometimes while they sleep.

Why does this happen? It could be a manifestation of stress, which is a common cause. The problem could also be crooked teeth, missing teeth or bite misalignments.

Nocturnal bruxism comes with these following symptoms, generally. Your jaw may feel stiff or sore. Your teeth may feel sensitive or feel discomfort. Your teeth may start to flatten or get smaller, which may indicate that your bruxism has been happening for a while.

If you notice these symptoms, make an appointment with the dentist quickly. Nocturnal bruxism that goes untreated can wear down or fracture your teeth. The dentist can take steps to help you control bruxism.

An easy way to control it is with a night guard. Basically a mouthguard, it can cushion your teeth during your sleep and keep them from rubbing on each other. You can stop the discomfort and prevent any harm from befalling your teeth. Our dentist can point you to a place you can get a night guard.

If you develop nocturnal bruxism and would like to know more about night guards, come see our dentist, Dr. Richard J. Gawarzewski. You can find him here at our office in Berlin, New Jersey. You need only call 856-767-0053 to schedule a visit.
